"The Case for Compatibility."

"The Case for Compatibility" is a paper by Robert L. Smith, Jr., who worked in Quality and Reliability Assurance Laboratory at George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. The summary states, "Ever since the use of missiles and space launch vehicles began, questions have existed in every program regarding the similarity between upstream (e.g., manufacturing, static firing ) and launch site checkout equipment. Programs have existed which utilized nearly identical equipment for both uses; other programs have existed in which any resemblance of the equipment was probably coincidental. Many factors have entered the final decisions, not the least of which were economic and schedule considerations, and, in some instances, the organizational structure of the developer."

"Technical problems in on-board checkout systems."

For the purposes of this paper, an onboard checkout system is defined as a system which is built into prime flight equipment, flies with it, and permits a checkout capability to exist during all the major phases of the test and mission life of that prime equipment. Varying degrees of capability may exist in such a system, depending on what is designed into it. This, in turn, is generally dependant on life and mission requirements of the prime equipment, degree of mission checkout required, reliability restrictions,redundancy levels, data management scheme, and equally important, state of the art . Not all checkout can be accomplished with onboard equipment. Mechanical system problems such as leak detection, for example, require techniques that cannot be remotely controlled and evaluated today. On the other hand, such things as in-flight telemetry have been used for quite a long time and will continue to be used for onboard checkout.

Letter to Robert K. Bell from Robert Smith.

Editor-in-Chief of Sagamore Press Inc., Publishers, Robert Smith, writes to Bell to say that his publishing company would be interested in Bell and Nickerson's story if they ever wish to write a book on it and the guided missles program.

Letter to Oscar Goldsmith from R. E. Smith.

R. E. Smith, as city attorney, writes to inform Oscar Goldsmith of an unpaid balance for improvements on Jefferson Street. He requests Goldsmith to call the office of the Clerk of the City of Huntsville to settle the claim.

I. Schiffman & Co. claim from Tom Toney's lawsuit.

These three letters detail I. Schiffman & Co.'s claim to $500 from the mortgage of Tom Toney on the automobile that was originally sold to him but later seized in 1919 for transporting untaxpaid liquor (see "Lawsuit against Tom Toney"). However, while the claim was approved by a Mr. McNeel, the refund was refused by the commissioner at Washington. R.E. Smith, representing I. Schiffman & Co., writes to McNeel, Danforth, and O'Rear Advisors and Consultants in hopes of reopening the claim again. McNeel, Danforth, and O'Rear advise Smith that reopening the claim would do no good. In the end, the prohibition commissioner, R. A. Haynes permanently closes the claim and I. Schiffman & Co. does not receive the $500 claim.

Letter from Michael G. Smith.

Smith writes to "Pat" with information as the former president of the court-martial, that would be beneficial to the defense counsel. "Pat" most likely is one of the members of the defense counsel as Smith refers to "you and Buster" several times throughout his letter, "Buster" being the nickname for Robert K. Bell, defense attorney.

Receipt of payment from the State of Alabama Treasurer's Office.

This receipt of payment details the purchase of land by Hutchens and Murdock for $144.00 in Madison County.

"General Formulation of the Iterative Guidance Mode."

From the abstract: "This report discusses the iterative guidance mode and its application to three-dimensional upper stage vacuum flight. It is an inertial or closed system mode in that the only inputs required after liftoff are available from the onboard navigation system. That is, the iterative scheme computes steering commands as a function of the state and of the vehicle - velocity, position, longitudinal acceleration, and gravitational acceleration - and the desired cutoff conditions. The guidance commands are updated each guidance cycle, using the updated state of the vehicle. The iterative guidance scheme is a path adaptive guidance scheme in that it will retain its optimization properties under all expected types and magnitudes of vehicle perturbations without any loss in accuracy at liftoff."
