Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, causing thousands of deaths a year. When breathed in, radon releases radioactive particles that damage lung tissue. Millions of homes across the country have elevated levels. You cannot see, smell or taste radon. The only way to know if your home is affected is to test. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General recommend that you test your home for radon. If elevated levels are jlgg*. confirmed, the problem can and should be corrected. Radon is a serious health p r o b l e m — b u t you can do something about i t . Radon gas can easily move through the soil and find many ways into your home. The most common entries for radon include cracks in foundations, and openings around sump pumps, pipes and drains. Look for a kit that says "Meets EPA Requirements/' If you prefer, you can hire a qualified firm to do the testing for you. A fourth telescope with an X-ray sensitive instrument has its own pointer. The telescopes are capable J of independent or simultaneous observa­ tions of selected targets. Each gathers light for a different astronomical instru­ ment designed to measure light at uv or X-ray wavelengths. These are invisible to the human eye and cannot be measured on the Earth's surface due to absorption by the Earth's atmosphere. To observe the invisible universe, we must climb above the Earth's atmosphere to study the stars from space. The Astro-1 Observatory works much like a mountaintop observa­ tory with astronomer/astronauts on board the Space Shuttle operating the uv tele­ scopes and astronomers on the ground operating the X-ray telescope. Observa­ tion data are recorded on photographic film or transmitted to the ground for \ scientists to analyze.
