<text>Dr. Frances Cabaniss Roberts was born December 19, 1916 in Gainesville, Alabama, a daughter of Richard H. and Mary (Watson) Roberts. She graduated from Livingston State College, earning her B.S. in 1937, and then the University of Alabama, earning her M.A. in 1940, then her PhD in 1956. Her 1940 M.A thesis was "An Experiment in Emancipation of Slaves by an Alabama Planter;" her 1956 PhD dissertation was "Background and Formative Period in the Great Bend and Madison County," 1956.

She began her professional career as a public school teacher first in Sumter County, Alabama and then in Huntsville, Alabama, 1937-1952. In Huntsville, Roberts taught history at Huntsville High School and then at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where she was a vigorous participant in the formation of that University. (The Extension Center, then at West Huntsville High School, opened in January 1950.) From 1955 to 1956, she was the only full-time faculty member.

Dr. Roberts served in many roles at UAH: instructor 1953-1956; assistant professor, 1956-1959; associate professor, 1959-1961; professor of history beginning in 1961 until her retirement on August 31st, 1980. In 1988, Dr. Roberts was honored with the dedication of Roberts Recital Hall. The University System Trustees issued this statement concerning the special day: "Dr. Roberts was one of the founding faculty of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, established the University History Department, and was its first full-time history professor. She devoted 18 years to the public schools and 29 years of dedicated service to UAH and accepting only the highest scholarly standards and inspiring generations of students to expand their academic horizons."

The collection of Dr. Roberts’ papers reflects her total immersion in the education, social, religious, musical, and literary life of the community as she led by doing. Frances Cabaniss Roberts died November 5, 2000 at the age of 83, leaving a legacy of leadership and dedication to the community.</text>

To stay here still for many ages, so that the world may not be
All:
struck with blindness.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Leader: All-knowing God, we lift our hearts to you in prayer.
We turn to you in our need, O God.
All:
Leader: We pray for the peoples of the world, that your gift of creation and
life might offer us a sign of your presence.
May we care for this world as you care for us.
All:
Leader: We pray for those people in this world who work for justice,
freedom and peace.
All:
Strengthen them, Creator God, that hatred and prejudice may fall,
and that justice will roll down like water.
Leader: We pray for strength for all who share the burden of those who
suffer from this AIDS crisis.
All:
May we, in sharing weakness, grow stronger.
Leader: For all who suffer in silence from AIDS, that they may seek the help
of others and of you.
All:
Give us hearts to respond to their needs, and give them discerning
ears to hear your voice.
Leader: We pray for all who care for AIDS patients and for all who are
seeking treatment and a cure.
All:
Grant them patience to endure and wisdom to call upon you for
strength and courage.
Leader: We pray for the families and friends of AIDS patients.
All:
Fill them with the knowledge of your healing and redemptive love.
Leader: We pray for the dying.
That their suffering may be relieved.
All:
Leader: We pray for those who have died of AIDS, and for all the departed;
That they may have rest in that place where there is no pain or
All:
grief, but life eternal.
Leader: Hear the prayers of your people, O God.
All:
We come to you in our need.

Ten Points on AIDS for World AIDS Day
1. AIDS Is a new worldwide problem.
Over 150,000cases of AIDS have been reported from more
than 145 countries around the world. All communities can
be affected by AIDS because the human 1mmunodef1cIency virus. HIV, that can cause AIDS can cross all boundaries, geographical and social. Worldwide, an estimated 5
to 1O m1ll1on people are already infected with HIV

2. We know how HIV spread•.
Fortunately, HIV can only be spread in three ways :
• sexual intercourse
* blood
• from infected mother-to-infant.

3. To know how HIV spread• Is to know
how to prevent Infection.
HIV can be spread by sexual intercourse - from man to
woman, from woman to man and from man to man . HIV can
also be spread through blood In two maIor ways : by
receiving a transfusion of contaminated blood; or if needles
or other skin-p1erc1ng instruments are used more than once
without being properly cleaned and sterilized after each
use. Finally, HIV can spread from infected mothers to the,r
infants, either before, during, or after birth .

4. The sexual spread of HIV can be prevented.
The most effective means of preventing the sexual spread
of HIV is by remaining with a.faithful, uninfected partner or
not having sexual intercourse at all . Otherwise, a person
should reduce the number of their sexual partners as much
as possible People should avoid sexual intercourse with
prostitutes or other people who have many sexual partners. Whenever having sexual intercourse with someone
who might possibly be infected with HIV, a condom should
be used - properly - from start to finish.

5. Infection through blood can be stopped
In a variety of ways.
Fortunately, blood for transfusion can be tested for infection with HIV and discarded if contaminated Needles and
other skin-piercing instruments can be sterilized after each
use. Drug users can - and should - stop in1ecting drugs; if
they continue, they should use only sterile needles and not
share them with anyone .

6. It Is Important to know how HIV Is NOT
spread.
·
HIV is NOT spread by casual contact at work or school .
shaking hands, touching or hugging . It Is NOT spread
through food or water, by sharing cups or glasses. by
sneezing, coughing, or insects, or in swimming pools or
on toilets . Knowing how HIV Is NOT spread helps people
understand that there is no danger of becoming infected
from casual contact.

7. AIDS affect• us all.
There is no reason to fear people who are HIV-infected or
have AIDS. They should not be discriminated against.
They need our support to help them with the physical and
emotional difficulties they face.

8. Information and education are vital.
Some day, medical research may give us a drug to cure
AIDS or a vaccine to prevent AIDS. Until then, we must
rely on changes in personal behaviour to preve~t the
spread of HIV. Information and education are therefore
vital In the fight against AIDS

9. A global mobilization for a global
threat.
National AIDS programmes already exist in nearly all
countries of the world. These programmes inform and
educate people about AIDS, how to avoid becoming
infected and how to protect others. National AIDS programmes are linked through the Global Programme on
AIDS of the World Health Organ1zat1on, which directs and
coordinates the Global AIDS Strategy. Because AIDS Is a
global problem, it can only be stopped In one country if It
Is stopped In all countries .

10. Together, we can stop AIDS.
You can contribute to stopping AIDS, by making sure that
you understand the facts about AIDS and helping others
to do the same. The risk of AIDS is not about who you are
or where you are. It's about what you do. We now have
the opportunity to talk about Al DS, to learn, to teach and
to speak out. Join the worldwide effort to stop AIDS .

Gently they go,
the beautiful,
the tender,
the kind;
I know, but
I do not approve
and am .not
resigned.

In 1953, Ludewig accepted a job to work with Von Braun in Huntsville, Alabama and decided to flee East Germany with his family. McCanless continued school in the United States and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Montevallo and then graduated with a Masters in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She served as the first full-time, professional librarian at UAH. After serving as the Library Director at UAH, she worked in the Huntsville Times newspaper library, the Huntsville Museum of Art’s Art Reference Library, and the Huntsville Museum of Art’s Education Resource Center. In addition, she consulted for the Alabama Library Exchange and created workshops on technology and library science.

<text>Christel Ludewig McCanless was born in Germany in 1939. Her father, Hermann Ludewig, was one of the V-2 engineers at Peenemuende. Consequently, she grew up in Peenemuende until an air raid in 1943 destroyed their home. McCanless and her family moved to Trebbin, Germany, which became part of East Germany after World War II.

McCanless is the author of "Fabergé and His Works: An Annotated Bibliography of the First Century of His Art" and a co-author of "Fabergé Eggs: A Retrospective."</text>

August 2, 1969
On this day, one hundred and fifty years ago, forty-four elected
delegates from the twenty-two counties in Alabama Territory adopted
and signed a constitution to organize the State of Alabama. The sign
ing of this document was the culmination of four weeks of deliberations
by the Convention, which had assembled on July 5 in a building at the
northwest. corner of Gates and Franklin streets, one block south of
the Public Square in Huntsville.
John Williams Walker, from Madison County, served as President
of the Convention; Clement Comer Clay, also from Madison, chaired
the committee which drafted the Constitution. Madison County was
represented by eight delegates; Monroe by four; Blount and Limestone
by three each. The counties represented by two delegates each were:
Shelby, Montgomery, Washington, Tuscaloosa, Lawrence, Franklin,
Cotaco (later Morgan), and Clark. Ten counties had one delegate each:
Cahaba (later Bibb), Conecuh, Dallas, Marengo, Marion, Lauderdale,
St. Clair, Autauga, Baldwin, and Mobile.
Today, the original handwritten Constitution is on display in the
Madison County Courthouse, where a ceremony to commemorate the
150th anniversary of its signing will be held at 2:00 P.M. Descendants
of the men who signed this historic document will be especially honored
during the ceremony.

After receiving her B.A. in 1940, she attended the University of Pennsylvania, acquiring an M.A. and Ph.D. in English literature (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).

Hutchens first held a part-time teaching position at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1955, then joined the faculty with a full-time position in 1957. She taught English, her specialties the English novel, literary criticism, and 18th century literature. Hutchens also chaired the steering committee “for its initial accreditation and the first committee for the selection of majors,” and served as the first elected president of the Faculty Senate. She moved to Agnes Scott College in 1961, remaining there until 1966. She eventually returned to UAH and remained a member of its English department until her retirement in 1979 (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).

Hutchens wrote prolifically over and after her career, publishing Irony in Tom Jones, Writing to Be Read, and “numerous articles in national and international journals” (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).

Hutchens was very active even outside of her academic career, serving as "president of the Huntsville Hotel Company, owner of the Russell [sic] Erskine Hotel, and as a director of the Huntsville Land Company, the West Huntsville Land Company, and the Mountain Heights Development Company.” She was "a founder and charter member of the board of Randolph School," a board member of the Huntsville Public Library and the Huntsville Symphony, and "an active member of the [Episcopalian] Church of Nativity.” Hutchens was also a member of "the Historic Huntsville Foundation, the Huntsville Historical Society, the Botanical Garden, the Burritt Museum of Art, the Huntsville Museum of Art, and the Friends of the Huntsville Public Library” (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).

<text>Eleanor Newman Hutchens (October 9, 1919 to November 9, 2016) attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, majoring in English and Greek.

<text>On October 2, 1906, Willy Otto Oskar Ley was born to Julius Otto Ley and Frida May. Even in his youth, Ley loved exploration and discovery, and Ley eventually became infatuated with rockets and space travel. In 1927, Ley helped found the Verein für Raumschiffahrt (Society for Space Travel), an amateur rocket association. In the meantime, Ley wrote prolifically about rockets for both foreign and German newspapers, acquiring a reputation as an international scientist.

Ley helped contribute to the popularity of rocketry in Germany, eventually working as a technical consultant for Fritz Lang’s "Die Frau im Mond" ("Woman in the Moon"). However, thanks in no small part to the Great Depression, the rocketry fad in Germany died down, and the Nazis rose to power. Horrified by the tenets of National Socialism and the Nazis who embraced them, Ley fled his home in Germany in 1936, first settling in Great Britain before permanently moving to the United States, becoming an American citizen in 1944.

During his time in the United States, Ley continued to pursue his love of rockets and science fiction, supervising two rocket mail operations in Greenwood Lake, New York in 1936, publishing scientific articles in science fiction magazines, and writing both science fiction and nonfictional books on rockets and engineering, many containing surprisingly accurate predictions about future technology. In 1940, Ley joined the newspaper "PM," where he met his future wife, whom he married in 1941. In 1944, Ley published "Rockets: the Future of Travel Beyond the Stratosphere," a text in which he expressed his belief that rockets would someday make the fantasy of space travel a reality. In 1949, he published "The Conquest of Space," a speculative science book.

Ley continued to write and participate in both science and science fiction projects for the rest of his life, never losing his passion for science. Ley passed away at age 62 on June 24, 1969, less than a month before Apollo 11 landed on the moon.</text>

<p>Perhaps the Saturn V’s greatest claim to fame is the Apollo Program, specifically Apollo 11. Several manned and unmanned missions that tested the rocket preceded the Apollo 11 launch. Apollo 11 was the United States’ ultimate victory in the space race with the Soviet Union; the spacecraft successfully landed on the moon, and its crew members were the first men in history to set foot on Earth’s rocky satellite.</p>
<p>A Saturn V rocket also put Skylab into orbit in 1973. A total of 15 Saturn Vs were built, but only 13 of those were used.</p></text>
