From December 1916 to January 1919, he served in the German Army in Flanders during World War I. After the war, he worked as a fireman on a locomotive and in 1921, he entered school at Beuth-Schule, Hoehere Technische Lehranstalt der Stadt Berlin, from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1924. From 1925 to 1937, he worked for Orenstein and Koppel, a major engineering company, in Berlin, Germany. During this time, he married Emma Berta Pauline Jaglitz on June 12, 1935. Likely through his friend Bernhard Tessmann, with whom he worked at Orenstein and Koppel, Ludewig began work with the rocket development project in Peenemünde, Germany, which was under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun, in May 1937. Ludewig’s first position was the Deputy of Design Chief under Walter Riedel, and in February 1942, he became the Chief of Acceptance and Inspection under Dr. von Braun. Ludewig’s daughter Christel was born on November 20, 1939 while he was stationed at Peenemünde. On the night of August 17/18, 1943, the British bombed the Peenemünde facility as part of Operation Hydra, destroying the Ludewig family’s home; however, Ludewig and his family survived the bombing. After the raid, Ludewig transferred from Peenemünde to assignments in Nordhausen and Berlin. After the end of the war, the Ludewig family moved to Trebbin, Germany to manage the farm of his father. At that time, Trebbin was inside East Germany, and in the Soviet sphere of influence. Ludewig worked to conceal the fact that he had worked with the rocket team at Peenemünde, fearing he would be forced to work on the Soviet rocket program. In 1953, he made an agreement to join many of his former colleagues in the United States and the family escaped to Berlin. The family arrived in New York on October 31, 1953 and by November were in Huntsville. Ludewig worked on the Redstone and Jupiter rocket program at Redstone Arsenal for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency until 1960, when he transferred to NASA at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. He worked in a variety of capacities there, including in the Systems Office as a Special Assistant under Konrad Dannenberg on the Saturn project. He retired from NASA in 1967. Hermann Ludewig passed away in Huntsville, Alabama on March 2, 1986. The family established a scholarship in the memory of Emmy and Hermann Ludewig at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2000. Pickering for his support and explains why he believes the Army is the best service branch to develop ballistic missiles. He also discusses the need for missiles in case of war with the Soviet Union. Nickerson was a staff officer at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal assigned to work on the Jupiter, the United States' first mid-range ballistic missile. He was arrested and court martialed for espionage in 1957 after releasing sensitive documents about the United States missile program to the press. At the time, Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson granted the Air Force sole authority to develop intermediate range ballistic missile systems. Nickerson disagreed with this policy, and in response, leaked documents that demonstrated the superiority of Army missiles compared to those developed by the Air Force. He eventually pled guilty to lesser charges and was suspended from the Army for one year and was fined $1,500. Dr. Wernher von Braun was among those who testified on Nickerson's behalf. The park's construction began in January 1964. Though a popular idea with the residents, the park ran into various difficulties and was never opened to the public or even fully completed. Construction was abandoned, and the land was put up for auction on October 17, 1967. She graduated from Livingston State College, earning her B.S. in 1937, and then the University of Alabama, earning her M.A. in 1940, then her PhD in 1956. Her 1940 M.A thesis was "An Experiment in Emancipation of Slaves by an Alabama Planter;" her 1956 PhD dissertation was "Background and Formative Period in the Great Bend and Madison County," 1956. She began her professional career as a public school teacher first in Sumter County, Alabama and then in Huntsville, Alabama, 1937-1952. In Huntsville, Roberts taught history at Huntsville High School and then at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where she was a vigorous participant in the formation of that University. (The Extension Center, then at West Huntsville High School, opened in January 1950.) From 1955 to 1956, she was the only full-time faculty member. Dr. Roberts served in many roles at UAH: instructor 1953-1956; assistant professor, 1956-1959; associate professor, 1959-1961; professor of history beginning in 1961 until her retirement on August 31st, 1980. In 1988, Dr. Roberts was honored with the dedication of Roberts Recital Hall. The University System Trustees issued this statement concerning the special day: "Dr. Roberts was one of the founding faculty of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, established the University History Department, and was its first full-time history professor. She devoted 18 years to the public schools and 29 years of dedicated service to UAH and accepting only the highest scholarly standards and inspiring generations of students to expand their academic horizons." The collection of Dr. Roberts’ papers reflects her total immersion in the education, social, religious, musical, and literary life of the community as she led by doing. Frances Cabaniss Roberts died November 5, 2000 at the age of 83, leaving a legacy of leadership and dedication to the community. She was an active member of The Order of St. John at that time, doing both midwifery and infant care. She did not graduate high school but was given special permission to attend college in Berlin as a student of medicine. She passed her qualifying examination with a mark of “good,” allowing her to practice as a state recognized nurse in Germany. There, she acted as head nurse of the Delivery and Maternity Department at the Johanniter Hospital in Bonn, Germany, from March to May 1956. She immigrated to the United States on September 15, 1956, arriving on the Berndt Leonhardt. Originally living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she worked for short periods at the Wilmington General Hospital in Delaware, and the Delaware State Hospital at Farnhurst. Despite the language barrier, she was well recommended by both institutions. She later moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where her sister Maria resided. Her brother-in-law, Werner Kuers, was employed at Marshall Space Flight Center after immigrating to the United States to work on Operation Paperclip. While in Huntsville, Nörenberg worked as a midwife. She applied for permanent citizenship via the Birmingham, Alabama district court in 1958. She moved to Birmingham in the late 1950s, where she continued to work as a midwife. She died in July 1977. In America, as in Germany, Hildegard was a prolific letter writer. She traveled regularly, within and without Germany, her visits often lasting long enough that she would both send and receive correspondence while she was away from home. She carefully saved the correspondence from friends and family, but especially that which she exchanged during the 1920s-1930s with her close friend and long-time love, Hans Albert Silberberg. Hans was a music student, pianist, and composer. He was also a regular traveler, sending Hildegard letters and postcards from wherever he happened to be – including onboard a ship crossing the ocean.
