Astro-1 is an observatory consisting of
four telescopes.Three of the telescopes,
equipped with instruments sensitive to
ultraviolet (uv) light, are mounted on a
single pointing system. A fourth telescope
with an X-ray sensitive instrument has its
own pointer. The telescopes are capable
J

of independent or simultaneous observa
tions of selected targets. Each gathers
light for a different astronomical instru
ment designed to measure light at uv or
X-ray wavelengths. These are invisible to
the human eye and cannot be measured
on the Earth's surface due to absorption
by the Earth's atmosphere. To observe the
invisible universe, we must climb above
the Earth's atmosphere to study the stars
from space. The Astro-1 Observatory
works much like a mountaintop observa
tory with astronomer/astronauts on board
the Space Shuttle operating the uv tele
scopes and astronomers on the ground
operating the X-ray telescope. Observa
tion data are recorded on photographic
film or transmitted to the ground for

\

scientists to analyze.

Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope-UIT

Broad Band X-RayTelescope-BBXRT

• The Vela supernova remnant is the
remains of a star that exploded about
30,000 years ago, forming an expanding
shell of hot dust and gas.

• The Galaxy M83 shines brightly in "
the ultrJViolet portion of the spectrum
because its spiral arms contain many
young stars.
£ 4

• HUT will obtain far-ultraviolet spectro
scopic data from white dwarfs, emission
nebulae, active galaxies, and quasars.

• UIT will record photographic images in
ultraviolet light of galaxies, star clusters,
and nebulae.

• WUPPE will study polarized ultraviolet
light from magnetic white dwarfs, binary
stars, reflection nebulae, and active
galaxies.

• Interstellar dust in the Pleiades star
cluster can be seen in the reflected light of
nearby stars.

• Centaurus A is an active galaxy and
X-ray source. The central portion of this
galaxy is obscured by a disk of dust and
gas where young stars reside and new
stars are forming.
• BBXRT will obtain high-resolution X-ray
spectra from stellar coronae, X-ray binary
stars, active galactic nuclei, and galaxy
clusters.

Far away, in places beyond our reach,
Exploding stars forge the elements used to
make new stars, planets, and even life,
Stars are locked in intricate dances of
mutual attraction,
Tiny stars exist where a sugar cube of
matter weighs as much as a billion tons,
Active galaxies eject matter from their
centers at incredible speeds,
Mysterious objects shine with the brilliance
of 10 trillion suns,
Holes in the fabric of space consume
matter and even light.

of sand and collections of hundreds of
billions of stars, called galaxies, are as
numerous as blades of grass.
We can learn even more about stars
and galaxies by breaking their visible light
into a rainbow of colors: violet, indigo,
blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.
What do these colors mean? If you look
at a fire or candle flame, the hottest part
is blue and the coolest part is red. Stars
are the same way. Red stars are cooler
than blue ones.
To take a star's temperature, instru
ments called spectrometers separate
starlight into colors. Telescopes also see
lines of color called spectra which are
emitted when elements such as hydrogen
and iron are heated. The patterns of these
chemical signatures help us determine
the makeup of stars.

Passive
Microwave
Remote Sensing
of Snow

A snowpack is comprised of billions of tiny ice
crystals. Within a snowpack the crystals metamor
phose due to processes such as vapor transfer,
mechanical wear, and aging which generally cause
them to become more rounded as their protrusions
wear away. Mie scattering theory describes
scattering of electromagnetic radiation by spheres
and was developed to model atmospheric particles.
Mie theory is a useful way to explain the scattering of
microwave radiation by snow crystals within a
snowpack. Once metamorphosed, snow grains can
approximate spheres. Theoretically, the microwave
radiation emitted from the ground beneath the
snowpack is scattered by the overlying snow grains
thus reducing the amount of radiation that leaves the
snow surface. Microwave brightness temperature
(Tb) is a quantitative measure of the amount of
radiation received by a passive microwave sensor.
Deeper snow is often associated with more
microwave scattering and thus a lower TB. In the case
of dry snow, radiative transfer modeling using Mie
scattering theory may be used to calculate snow
depths based on microwave TB because snow depth is
inversely related to microwave TB.

The world map to the right shows the areal
extent and depth of snow as derived from the
Scanning Multichannel Microwave
Radiometer (SMMR) which operated on board
the Nimbus-7 satellite. When the data for this
image were acquired in February 1983,
approximately 38 percent of the world's land
surface was snow covered. Seasonal snow is
shown in three different depths: shallow snow
(white) from about 1 to 10 cm; moderately
deep snow (pink) from about 11 to 33 cm; deep
snow (red) greater than 33 cm. The ice sheets
(permanent ice and snow) are shown in deep
purple. Nimbus-7 SMMR and now the Special
Sensor Microwave Imager (SSMI) data from
the Defense Mapping Satellite Program are the
only sources of monthly global snow volume.

These maps show SMMR-derived snow cover
and depth in the Northern Hemisphere for an
average of 3 days in mid-February 1981 (top)
and in mid-April 1981 (bottom). Snow
depths range from 3 cm (shown in light blue)
to 84 cm (magenta). Snow less than about 3
cm in depth is nearly transparent to
microwave radiation, and thus snow extent is
underestimated in some areas. Forest
canopies can mask the microwave radiation
emanating from the underlying snow
resulting in snow depths which are known to
be too shallow. The resolution of the SMMR
data is 1 / 2° longitude by 1 / 2° latitude.

AVERAGE SNOW VOLUME
(DEC.-MAR.)

SMMR data were used to construct these bar graphs
showing snow volume and snow-covered area
averaged for the months December through March for
the Northern Hemisphere. While snow extent and
depth are highly variable from year to year, a
sustained trend toward a change in snow extent or
volume is not evident from these data. These baseline
data are needed for the assessment of present climate
conditions and for the study of climate change. This is
because snow is a highly reflective material that may
reflect 80% or more of the incident solar radiation back
to space. Also, snow, with its low thermal conductivity
is a good insulating material, and thus the presence of
snow alters the surface energy balance and promotes
local cooling.
