Astro-1 is an observatory consisting of
four telescopes.Three of the telescopes,
equipped with instruments sensitive to
ultraviolet (uv) light, are mounted on a
single pointing system. A fourth telescope
with an X-ray sensitive instrument has its
own pointer. The telescopes are capable
J

of independent or simultaneous observa
tions of selected targets. Each gathers
light for a different astronomical instru
ment designed to measure light at uv or
X-ray wavelengths. These are invisible to
the human eye and cannot be measured
on the Earth's surface due to absorption
by the Earth's atmosphere. To observe the
invisible universe, we must climb above
the Earth's atmosphere to study the stars
from space. The Astro-1 Observatory
works much like a mountaintop observa
tory with astronomer/astronauts on board
the Space Shuttle operating the uv tele
scopes and astronomers on the ground
operating the X-ray telescope. Observa
tion data are recorded on photographic
film or transmitted to the ground for

\

scientists to analyze.

Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope-UIT

Broad Band X-RayTelescope-BBXRT

• The Vela supernova remnant is the
remains of a star that exploded about
30,000 years ago, forming an expanding
shell of hot dust and gas.

• The Galaxy M83 shines brightly in "
the ultrJViolet portion of the spectrum
because its spiral arms contain many
young stars.
£ 4

• HUT will obtain far-ultraviolet spectro
scopic data from white dwarfs, emission
nebulae, active galaxies, and quasars.

• UIT will record photographic images in
ultraviolet light of galaxies, star clusters,
and nebulae.

• WUPPE will study polarized ultraviolet
light from magnetic white dwarfs, binary
stars, reflection nebulae, and active
galaxies.

• Interstellar dust in the Pleiades star
cluster can be seen in the reflected light of
nearby stars.

• Centaurus A is an active galaxy and
X-ray source. The central portion of this
galaxy is obscured by a disk of dust and
gas where young stars reside and new
stars are forming.
• BBXRT will obtain high-resolution X-ray
spectra from stellar coronae, X-ray binary
stars, active galactic nuclei, and galaxy
clusters.

Far away, in places beyond our reach,
Exploding stars forge the elements used to
make new stars, planets, and even life,
Stars are locked in intricate dances of
mutual attraction,
Tiny stars exist where a sugar cube of
matter weighs as much as a billion tons,
Active galaxies eject matter from their
centers at incredible speeds,
Mysterious objects shine with the brilliance
of 10 trillion suns,
Holes in the fabric of space consume
matter and even light.

of sand and collections of hundreds of
billions of stars, called galaxies, are as
numerous as blades of grass.
We can learn even more about stars
and galaxies by breaking their visible light
into a rainbow of colors: violet, indigo,
blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.
What do these colors mean? If you look
at a fire or candle flame, the hottest part
is blue and the coolest part is red. Stars
are the same way. Red stars are cooler
than blue ones.
To take a star's temperature, instru
ments called spectrometers separate
starlight into colors. Telescopes also see
lines of color called spectra which are
emitted when elements such as hydrogen
and iron are heated. The patterns of these
chemical signatures help us determine
the makeup of stars.

Harrison passed away leaving John Harrison as the sole owner of the store. The Historic Huntsville Foundation purchased the store in 1984, after the store closed due to John’s death in 1983. As one of the first major projects of the Historic Huntsville Foundation, the store was reopened in October of 1984 and is staffed by several volunteers. The Historic Huntsville Foundation currently continues the operation of Harrison Brothers Hardware in Huntsville, making it Alabama’s oldest operating hardware store.</text>

ACCEPTANCE CHECKOUT EQUIPMENT-SPACECRAFT (ACE-S/CJ

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - Thousands of system test points on the Apollo spacecraft must be
thoroughly checked out before it can be launched. These tests are made using checkout
equipment designed by NASA and developed and manufactured by General Electric's Apollo
Systems Organization. Called ACE-S/C, for Acceptance Checkout Equipment- Spacecraft, this
system is capable of testing all the checkpoints on the Apollo modules manually, semi
automatically, or fully automatically. Shown above is the control room of one of the 14 ACE
stations manufactured by Apollo Systems for NASA. Each station also contains a computer
room and termlnal,/switchlng facility. These ACE stations are in use at locations throughout the
nation for checkout of the Apollo modules from factory to launch pad.

<p>Perhaps the Saturn V’s greatest claim to fame is the Apollo Program, specifically Apollo 11. Several manned and unmanned missions that tested the rocket preceded the Apollo 11 launch. Apollo 11 was the United States’ ultimate victory in the space race with the Soviet Union; the spacecraft successfully landed on the moon, and its crew members were the first men in history to set foot on Earth’s rocky satellite.</p>
<p>A Saturn V rocket also put Skylab into orbit in 1973. A total of 15 Saturn Vs were built, but only 13 of those were used.</p></text>

He studied law in Huntsville under Silas Parsons and practiced law with Leroy Pope Walker, Robert C. Brickell, and Francis P. Ward. These papers are sorted by year, except when an obvious grouping of an estate is evident. The papers continue through professional activities at the Madison County Courthouse including those of his son, James Budd Cabaniss, and his daughter, Fanny Cabaniss, who were clerks of the Chancery Court and a few papers of his son, Septimus, Jr., who owned a bookstore for a brief period.</text>

Donegan during their years (1837-1854) as cotton commissioners (cotton factors). The office in New Orleans particularly kept a steady business correspondence between the two offices. Included are papers one might expect to maintain a business at the times.<br />Included in Box 1 is a copy of a paper delivered by Dr. Roberts to the Alabama Historical Association in 1974, "Fearn, Donegan and Company: A Case Study of the Cotton Factorage System in the Tennessee Valley." Original partners of the company included Thomas Lockhart, Dr. Thomas Fearn, and James J. Donegan. Later Isaac W. Moon and Albert Crenshaw of New Orleans were partners, and then William P. Atwood. Matthew W. Steele and Arthur Mosley Hopkins of Huntsville joined the company, and still later Donegan's son, James H. Donegan after his graduation from Georgetown College worked for them.<br />These papers are sorted by year and then grouped as accounts, receipts, and statements; bills of lading receipts; correspondence from Liverpool, England, the New York office and balance sheets; business correspondence with local customers, then sorted generally by area; some few personally related correspondence (e.g. Weakley, Fearn, Donegan) court case; and a few telegrams.</text>

<text>Eleanor Newman Hutchens (October 9, 1919 to November 9, 2016) attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, majoring in English and Greek. After receiving her B.A. in 1940, she attended the University of Pennsylvania, acquiring an M.A. and Ph.D. in English literature (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).

Hutchens first held a part-time teaching position at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1955, then joined the faculty with a full-time position in 1957. She taught English, her specialties the English novel, literary criticism, and 18th century literature. Hutchens also chaired the steering committee “for its initial accreditation and the first committee for the selection of majors,” and served as the first elected president of the Faculty Senate. She moved to Agnes Scott College in 1961, remaining there until 1966. She eventually returned to UAH and remained a member of its English department until her retirement in 1979 (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).

Hutchens wrote prolifically over and after her career, publishing Irony in Tom Jones, Writing to Be Read, and “numerous articles in national and international journals” (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).

Hutchens was very active even outside of her academic career, serving as "president of the Huntsville Hotel Company, owner of the Russell [sic] Erskine Hotel, and as a director of the Huntsville Land Company, the West Huntsville Land Company, and the Mountain Heights Development Company.” She was "a founder and charter member of the board of Randolph School," a board member of the Huntsville Public Library and the Huntsville Symphony, and "an active member of the [Episcopalian] Church of Nativity.” Hutchens was also a member of "the Historic Huntsville Foundation, the Huntsville Historical Society, the Botanical Garden, the Burritt Museum of Art, the Huntsville Museum of Art, and the Friends of the Huntsville Public Library” (“Eleanor Hutchens - Obituary”).
