Title A name given to the resource Rudolf Hermann Collection Identifier An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context Rudolf Hermann Collection Description An account of the resource Rudolf Hermann was born in Leipzig, Germany, and he studied at the University of Leipzig and at the Aachen Institute of Technology. He first started working with wind tunnels in 1934 when Professor Carl Wieselsberger engaged him to work at Aachen on development of a supersonic wind tunnel. On January 6, 1936, Dr. Wernher von Braun visited Dr. Hermann to arrange for use of the Aachen supersonic wind tunnel for Army problems. On April 1, 1937, Dr. Hermann became Director of the Supersonic Wind Tunnel at the Army installation at Peenemünde. Results from the Aachen and Peenemünde wind tunnels were crucial in achieving aerodynamic stability for the A-4 rocket, later designated as the V-2. The Allied air raid on Peenemünde on August 17, 1943 accelerated plans to build a Mach 10 “hypersonic” wind tunnel facility; Dr. Hermann served as the director of this new facility. As World War II drew to a close in Europe, Dr. Hermann and his associates ignored Hitler’s destruction orders and preserved their wind tunnel documents and components, which were then acquired by the advancing American forces. After being brought to the United States through Operation Paperclip, Dr. Hermann became a consultant to the Air Force at its Wright Field in November 1945. In 1951, he was named a professor of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. In 1962, Dr. Hermann became the first Director of the Research Institute at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), a position he held until he retired in 1970.¹ ¹Lundquist, Charles A. and Anne M. Title A name given to the resource Oscar Holderer Collection Identifier An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context Oscar Holderer Collection Description An account of the resource Oscar Holderer was born on November 4, 1919 in Pruem, Germany. His mother's name was Helene. His father Richard Holderer was a surveyor for the German Government, and his younger brother Erich died in battle in Russia. His sister had two children, Axel and Thea. Oscar Holderer studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Berlin. He married Inge Spors in Berlin on February 20, 1943, and in the same year, he was transferred to Peenemünde by the German Army to work on the V-2 rocket. While on this project, he designed an airbrake to retrieve experimental V2 versions and servo drives for the WASSERFALL antiaircraft rocket. In 1945, Holderer joined the 120 team members working under Wernher von Braun for the US Army in the USA, initially in Fort Bliss, Texas. The next year, his mother, his wife, and his son Thomas, born January 18, 1945, joined him in the USA. In 1950, the family moved to Huntsville, Alabama, and on February 1, 1953, Holderer's son Michael was born. In 1960, NASA officially became Holderer's employer. While working in the USA, Holderer contributed to rocketry and space flight programs. He designed transporters and test hardware for the Redstone and Pershing missiles and specialized in developing and engineering experimental aerodynamic hardware. His largest project was the design of the 14" trisonic wind tunnel, for which he was granted several U.S. Patents and a Meritorious Civil Service Award. He retired from NASA in 1974 and worked for the Alabama Space Science Commission until 2005. During this time, he designed most of the simulators used in Space Camp USA, Huntsville, Alabama. Holderer's sons Thomas and Michael became engineers. Oscar Holderer has four grandchildren: Sarah, Erich, Melani, and Daniel. In 1993, Holderer's wife Inge died, and Holderer was remarried to Jan Dunlap in 1995. Jan's two children from her previous marriage, Clifford Dunlap and Mary Gaither, live in the Huntsville area. Holderer died on May 5, 2015. Jacobi was born on January 13, 1918 in Saalfeld, Germany. On November 16, 1946, Jacobi arrived in the United States under Operation Paperclip with a group of 118 fellow scientists in Dr. Wernher von Braun’s team. The Paperclips started to work for the War Department of the United States at Fort Bliss, Texas, in White Sands, New Mexico, and finally in Huntsville, Alabama in 1950. The team continued to work on their rocket research, which culminated in the Apollo/Saturn Program and man landing on the moon in 1969. Jacobi spent his entire career with NASA; even in retirement, he followed the events and projects at NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center. Jones was born on August 16, 1935 to Albin Oscar and Jennie Katharine Pickett Jones in Fayetteville, Tennessee. He remained in Fayetteville, Tennessee, until after his graduation from high school, at which point he moved to Rome, Georgia, to attend Berry College. After college, Mr. Jones worked under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for forty years specifically in Huntsville, Alabama. During his early career, Mr. Jones worked to gather vibration data for the Saturn V rocket in support of the Apollo program, and he even received commendations for his work in supporting the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing. Later in his career, he worked as the chief engineer and later as the mission manager for both the Astro-1 and Astro-2 Observatory Missions, which put a system of telescopes on the space shuttle to transform it into an observatory. By the time he retired in 1997, Mr. Jones had received numerous recognitions and awards, including the NASA Exceptional Service and Leadership Awards and the European Space Agency’s Spacelab Medals. After retiring, Mr. Jones relocated to Asheville, North Carolina, and began tutoring students as well as volunteering for organizations like the Senior Tar Heel Legislature and Men’s Garden Club of Asheville. He attended Berlin Institute of Technology, and graduated December 1930 with a Master of Science in Engineering, (machine construction). He worked at Peenemunde, Germany in 1938 and worked with Werner Von Braun. As Nazi Germany began to break down, he and the rest of the Paperclip scientists surrendered to the Allies; he came to the United States in 1945 and began working at Fort Bliss, Texas, assembling, testing, and launching V-2 rockets created from German components acquired by the U.S. Army. Kuers moved to Huntsville in 1950 with Werner von Braun. He served first as deputy, then director of the Marshall Space Flight Center’s Manufacturing and Engineer Division. By late 1964, he became the Director of Marshall Space Flight Center’s Manufacturing and Engineer Division. Kuers helped develop a new way to weld large parts of the Saturn II rocket and suggested astronauts should use water tanks to simulate weightlessness. He retired in 1969 and moved to Mexico. Werner Kuers was also an avid musician and was one of the original founders and a concert master of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. He died of cancer on May 14, 1983 at Bethesda, Maryland. From December 1916 to January 1919, he served in the German Army in Flanders during World War I. After the war, he worked as a fireman on a locomotive and in 1921, he entered school at Beuth-Schule, Hoehere Technische Lehranstalt der Stadt Berlin, from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1924. From 1925 to 1937, he worked for Orenstein and Koppel, a major engineering company, in Berlin, Germany. During this time, he married Emma Berta Pauline Jaglitz on June 12, 1935. Likely through his friend Bernhard Tessmann, with whom he worked at Orenstein and Koppel, Ludewig began work with the rocket development project in Peenemünde, Germany, which was under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun, in May 1937. Ludewig’s first position was the Deputy of Design Chief under Walter Riedel, and in February 1942, he became the Chief of Acceptance and Inspection under Dr. von Braun. Ludewig’s daughter Christel was born on November 20, 1939 while he was stationed at Peenemünde. On the night of August 17/18, 1943, the British bombed the Peenemünde facility as part of Operation Hydra, destroying the Ludewig family’s home; however, Ludewig and his family survived the bombing. After the raid, Ludewig transferred from Peenemünde to assignments in Nordhausen and Berlin. After the end of the war, the Ludewig family moved to Trebbin, Germany to manage the farm of his father. At that time, Trebbin was inside East Germany, and in the Soviet sphere of influence. Ludewig worked to conceal the fact that he had worked with the rocket team at Peenemünde, fearing he would be forced to work on the Soviet rocket program. In 1953, he made an agreement to join many of his former colleagues in the United States and the family escaped to Berlin. The family arrived in New York on October 31, 1953 and by November were in Huntsville. Ludewig worked on the Redstone and Jupiter rocket program at Redstone Arsenal for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency until 1960, when he transferred to NASA at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. He worked in a variety of capacities there, including in the Systems Office as a Special Assistant under Konrad Dannenberg on the Saturn project. Von Pragenau joined the von Braun team in Huntsville, Alabama in 1957, where he spent the next thirty-four years working to improve NASA’s space shuttles. During his time working for NASA, von Pragenau was granted ten patents, including one for lighter and safer space shuttles. Von Pragenau retired from NASA in 1991, but he continued to work with NASA through Provident Technology. George L. von Pragenau passed away July 11, 2013.
