Mrs. Eugenia Isabella Cunningham, who served on the staff of Oakwood College and was widely known as Mother Cunningham, died on June 20, 1963, at the Riverside Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Cunningham Hall in the first picture, according to the postcard, is a single-story building on a flat plane of grass, its entrance a glass wall and glass door, with a tree near the entrance. The second picture is of Cunningham Hall on September 28, 2024, is a residence hall in a college campus called “Oakwood College.” The building is a U-shaped building, built to be 3 stories tall, a pillared awning over the entrance, with a concrete path and stairs leading up to the entrance. There are bushes along the concrete path, and two trees at the corners of the building’s walls. The construction of Cunningham Hall would not be possible if it weren’t for Eugenia Isabella Cartwright. She was born January 31, 1878, near Greenville, Mississippi, born a daughter to former slaves from a plantation in Virginial. Her and her family shortly moved to Mississippi, then were caught in a flood of 1882 caused faulty levee system breaking in around 700 places. To get away from the floodwaters, Eugenia and her family moved to Stoneville, Mississippi, which is where Eugenia went to elementary school. This was halted to when her mother died, forcing her to help paying doctors bills instead. By the time she got to Oakwood, she was starting highschool work at the age of 35, and it was there that she was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 1917, she married Lewey Cunningham. Their love sired one child. ALong with her schoolwork, she got a job as a superintendent of a college. Throughout her career in working through college, working as a matron of the college dining room, then a dean of women, then manager of the college laundry and of the college store. She served Oakwood college for nearly 50 years, and became well known to alumni throughout the nation. Cunningham Hall, the college women’s residence on the Oakwood campus, is named in her honor. Her life story is the subject of an autobiography. Make Bright the Memories, which was published in 1951 by the Southern Publishing Association in Nashville, Tennessee.
